My Father
As a child, I didn't have a father growing up. My biological dad left my mother and I when I was about three years of age. He screwed around with my mom's friend and ran off with her back to Connecticut and took our car as well. Sounds like a huge douche right? That's just because he is. The last present he gave to me was this stuffed Taz from Cartoon Network. On the back he wrote "Happy Birthday Zachary, Love Daddy" and dated it 1998.
Ever since that day, I haven't the man since. Until I got older, his friend added me on Facebook and started to talk to me about my father, so she gave me his number and he was wanting for us to talk on the phone sometimes because he wanted to get to know me. At first i was annoyed because he was away from me for like 13 years of my life and then out of know where here he is. So I called him on Father's Day for the first time. I'll admit, I was a little bit scared about it. But once he started cracking jokes, I got use to talking to him; I guess you can say he broke the ice between us with some jokes.
After we have been talking awhile to each other I finally persuaded him for me to see him, two summers later I flew up to Connecticut to see him and see the rest of my family I have never seen in such a long time. Since my Dad had a roommate, he didn't want me to be in the way of everything so I stayed at my Aunt Shawn's house. Now, she is the sweetest person I have ever met in my life time. She would do anything for anybody. She is such a giver and has such a nice warm heart. When I was out there my Dad and his twin sister Michelle's birthday on June 23rd. So for that I day I spent that whole day with him. First, I went to go to go see what the man does for his career. My dad, Martin, deals with sewers. Like cleaning them, unclogging them, and doing other things with that. You'd think it would be really easy, but its honestly not. Anyway after he showed me what he does for a living him and I went to go see his friends because they also wanted to see me since my dad talks a lot about me. Lastly for the day we went to go to this go kart racing place. And it was not like the go karts we have here in Branson, it was WAY better. They go at least 45 miles per hour and we had to wear a neck brace type thing and a dirt bike helmet. Let me tell you, it was the most fun I have had in awhile. I beat the old man twice and we played three times :) So after we got done at the go-karting place, we came across this bowling place and since I beat him at go-karting he wanted to beat me in something. So he suggests to go bowling the next day. I don't know about you, but I love to bowl. So I answered with a yes and a smile on my face.
The next day comes around and my aunts and cousins wanted to take me to this really cool water park. They said it was really fun and you never get bored. So, I obviously said yes. We all got packed and started to head that way. As we got there, the place was already packed. As they were having people enter the building, we all ran to go find a good spot to put our things. And when I mean we ran, we ran real fast. My aunt, Michelle, found this real good spot and so she put her things there and right after she did this Mexican guy put his things there as well. And they both looked at each other. I knew something was about to go down, aka fight. So as my aunt kindly said that our things were there first and if he could put his things somewhere else, this guy starts cussing her out in Spanish. I know because I take Spanish and I know some words of the genre. After at least 10 minutes went by, he finally left and found another spot. When everyone got settled, we all went our separate ways my older cousin went with me and the little ones stayed with my aunts. He showed me around the water park and came across that this isn't just a water park. It's a water park and an amusement park as well, with roller coasters and what not. So i thought this place was really amazing!!
The day was going by kinda slow and around 3 o' clock we all started to pack up so I can go back home to get ready to go bowling with my dad. As we stopped to have people use the restroom before we head home I got an e-mail from my dad. I read the message and once I read it, it brought a tear to my eye. Here I was, getting so pumped to hangout with my dad again and doing something I love I was really excited. The e-mail said "I'm sorry son I am not gonna be able to go today because I have a little tickle in my throat" I got so mad real fast and sad. I thought to myself why is he canceling just because a little tickle, grow a pair and tough it out. After that tragedy we went home and we all started to play some family games to get my mind off of him and that was the last time I saw my dad. The reason why I keep that toy he gave me is because it's to remind myself to never become a father like him.
I'm so sorry you've had these disappointments in life. I admire that you view them as lessons pointing you to the kind of dad you want to be yourself. Martin is missing out, for sure...Thanks for sharing this, Zach.
